He’d gotten too much ink. Gradually, it all gathered at the tip of his brush. Ji Chang’s hand trembled; one ink droplet fell. In the blink of an eye, it had soaked into the pristine white of the paper forever.

He bit his lower lip, then simply followed the trail of ink to swiftly put brush to paper and write:

“Imperial brother Zhongxu: the situation is critical.”

The young boy’s eyes had welled up with tears, yet he continued writing the letter. Twelve lines, no more and no less. Brushstrokes clean and precise. All princes of the Zheng Dynasty possessed this skill.

On that black and white paper, Ji Chang stamped his cinnabar seal. He then examined it with care, before folding it up and handing it to Tang Qianzi. The childish yet determined look on his face at that moment reminded Tang Qianzi of a gambler who’d bet his last gold baht in the gambling house.

Ji Chang looked at his troops, then suddenly smiled. He was still thirteen years old, not yet an adult by any means, and so his smile was still very bright. Yet it was also very tired, and his brows were very heavy, as if they would never rise again.

Flower in Novoland is part of Novoland (Chinese: 九州, translation: Nine States): a shared universe that multiple web novel authors write and publish in. 

Flower in Novoland is specifically the prequel to Novoland: Pearl Eclipse, the 2021 drama starring Yang Mi, whose source novel is also by 萧如瑟 (Xiao Ru Se). 

The novels (and their drama adaptations) are generally standalone, and don’t need to be watched in any particular order.
