The Drama Meter’s translation of the official synopsis on Youku: Princess Ningyuan dies mysteriously at a banquet during the Lantern Festival. Li Peiyi (played by Bai Lu), head of the Imperial Guard, and Xiao Huaijin (played by Wang Xingyue), an officer from the Imperial History Bureau, are assigned to the case. A strong martial artist with an affinity for reading people’s hearts, Li Peiyi is cold, kind, and determined to uncover the truth. For her, this investigation is not just about cracking the case—it’s also a battle of wits with the murderer. Together with the meticulous Xiao Huaijin, she peels back the layers and solve the mystery behind the princess’s death. 

But not long after, a succession of strange and complex incidents unfold within the inner palace of the Tang dynasty, all involving the fates of various women in the harem. Delving deeper into the mysteries of the Tang Dynasty, Li Peiyi and Xiao Huaijin gradually uncover the truth behind the long-standing mystery behind a massacre that happened fifteen years ago: one that involved the Li family.

The Drama Meter’s translation of the official synopsis on Shuqi: In the ninth year of Tang Dynasty’s Zhenguan reign, the eldest daughter of former crown prince Li Jiancheng was found dead by hanging at her own wedding. Was it suicide or murder? The circumstances were unclear.

A group was assembled to investigate the case: the youngest son of Emperor Taizong, Li Yuan; the daughter of the Prime Minister Wei Zheng; and two noble young men close to the emperor.

The suspects? Shockingly, the current Empress, Changsun, and the Crown Prince Li Chengqian.

But as the investigation unfolded, so did their understanding of several bloody secrets, particularly those behind “The Xuanwu Gate Incident.” It implicated a tangled web of people at a time when the Tang army was right in the middle of a war against Tuyuhun. In the capital city of Chang’an, hidden currents were at play, and the Tang Dynasty, less than twenty years old, has already begun to face a test of life and death.

This is Bai Lu and Wang Xingyue‘s fourth time collaborating. They previously starred together in Song of Youth (2021), One and Only (2021), and Story of Kunning Palace (2023). Quite (in)famously, Wang Xingyue has never been the primary love interest in any of their previous dramas. The two are close friends outside of work. In one of Wang Xingyue’s interviews, he mentions that Bai Lu provides a “sense of security” for him.

The director, 尹涛 (Yin Tao), also directed Destined (Bai Jingting, Song Yi), The Blood of Youth (Li Hongyi, Liu Xueyi, Ao Ruipeng), and Who Rules The World (Yang Yang, Zhao Lusi). 

The costume designer, 方思哲 (Fang Sizhe), previously worked with Bai Lu on Story of Kunning Palace. Other dramas include Guardians of the Dafeng, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and New Life Begins. 

Filming started in November 2024.
